Pablo Picasso was born in 1881. His father was a respected art teacher. Many think his father's being an art teacher had a major influence on Picasso's artistic interest. It didn't take long for Picasso to get accepted into the Academy at Barcelona, for he was only fourteen. Picasso was a fast learner and found school to be boring. Barcelona was where Picasso painted his first work, "Girl with Bare Feet".

After being at Barcelona for two years he transferred to obtain better schooling. Three years later Picasso won a gold metal for his work, "Customs of Aragon". Many of Picasso's works are influenced by what was happening in the world around him and in his personal life. Picasso temporarily left the city and went to the country because of an illness. When Picasso returned he disliked modern art and used his mother's maiden name. Throughout the next four years Picasso went through a depressing state and lived life as a very poor man

When Picasso finally started to get over his illness so did his overall view on life. Many noticed that his work began to be filled with bright and beautiful colors. This change may have been because his life had changed so much and he realized that he was luckier than many people around him. Picasso also started to use sculpture to express himself and as some say "the black art" may have captivated him. Picasso went through a stage called Cubism. His first work was named, "The Young Woman of Avigon", which he did in 1907.

The picture had many hard angles, and geometric figures. The triangle is the dominant feature throughout the images. His work continued to be influenced by his personal life and the world surrounding him. Picasso met the love of his life, Eva Marcelle Humbert, but unfortunately they were separated by war and she later died in 1915. Humbert influenced Picasso's "Harlequin".

In 1917, Picasso began to work on costumes for the Russian Ballet and met his potential wife, a dancer for the Russian Ballet, Olga Kokhloven. The Russian Ballet was also an inspiration to Picasso and so he created, "Three Dancers". Picasso had many influences and the Civil War in Spain became his next. His work suggested the disposition of the period, and helped many people deal with the tragedies of war and their lost loved ones. As if the war wasn't enough a small town in Spain became a test site for some new bombs and Picasso produced, the "Guernica" that reflected what had happened to the town.

During World War II Picasso worked in Paris. Picasso created many works and was a motivation to the people in distress because of the war. In 1931 Picasso left his wife and had many mistresses after his divorce. They were an inspiration to his work since he used many of them as models. He became interested with his last mistress and he married her. Her name was Jacqueline Roque. Picasso lived into his nineties and made artwork until he died.

Picasso was one of the most significant artists in his time. Picasso's work influenced many artists such as Salavadore Dali, Juan Gris', Wassily Kandinski, Chagall, Klee and many others. His work influenced more than just artists, and his work symbolized more than just art. Picasso helped to contribute to the political and public surroundings in his time. Many people saw his work as inspiring and helped many individuals cope with two wars during his time, and a civil war in his homeland, Spain.

Politics and many other things inspired his work. He had hope for the future and displayed it in through his work. Picasso created over 50,000 works throughout his lifetime. Among his works are: 347 untitled engravings, stage sets, illustrations of classical texts, sculptures, ceramics, lithography, a play, and two poems. Picasso died in Mougins, France when he was ninety-two. Pablo Picasso was a very creative person and many saw his work as either brilliant or distasteful. Picasso was a very prominent person and may have been the greatest artist of the twentieth century.
