Critical Analysis: "Do not go Gentle into that Good Night&quot

Society has taken up the fact that everyone will die at some point. What society is divided on is if death should be feared or not. Dylan Thomas tries to persuade the reader in the poem “Do not go gentle into that good night,” to not fear death, but at the same time fight for life until you cannot fight anymore. He also tries to persuade society to live life to the fullest. The poem “Death do not go gentle into that good night,” is a perfect representation of how to perceive death.

Live everyday of your life to the fullest. Never regret what happened the past day, and live life one day at a time. Fight for life until the end. These are some of societies perceptions on death. Dylan Thomas also believes these views and conveys this message by saying, “Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” Thomas is telling us that even though you have become old, it doesn’t matter; keep on living life to the fullest. Some of society believes that man understands what death is and most of the men keep on living life to the fullest. Thomas also perceives these ideas and conveys the message by saying, “Though wise men at their end know dark is right, because their words had forked no lightning they do not go gentle into that good night.” Thomas tells us that even though wise men have taught us so much, it doesn’t mean that for some reason death will not pick them at some point. Some of society believes that never hold back on what you want to do. Do things on your first instinct, and life will be good. Thomas also believes this and writes, “Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, rage, rage against the dying of the light.” Thomas writes that when men realize they are about to die, the men look back at their lives and wonder what might have been if they didn’t hold back. Thomas also believes that those men that live life to the fullest, but when they realize they are going to die, they regret being wild. Thomas believes that man should keep on being wild and not regret death. He writes, “Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, and learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, do not go gentle into that good night.” Dylan Thomas has a father that is dying and writes about his father in this poem telling him not to go into eternal sleep so easily. He writes,

And you, my father, there on the sad height,

Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Death will come to everybody, but this shouldn’t affect the way you live your life. Always live to the fullest and one day at a time and never look back at a day and regret it. Dylan Thomas also believes these perceptions and conveys the messages in the poem “Do not go gentle into that good night.”
