Betsy Ross Spring of 1776

The most peculiar thing happened to me today. I was sitting in my shop sewing some clothes when some much unexpected guests walked in. It was three men from a flag committee from Congress. One of the men was the well known General George Washington. I could not help but wonder why they would want to see me.

The gentleman sat me down and told me something very important. “Betsy, we would be honored if you would sew the American flag. “ Colonel Ross then went on to explain that he knew I was a true patriot and could be trusted to sew the flag without a word to anyone. I eagerly accepted then and there.

George Washington then started to explain what the flag was to look like. The rough drawing ended up being a square with 13 stars and 13 stripes. Each star would have six points. Although I liked this design very much I knew the flag needed some changes.

Over a short time I thought up some suggestions. I recommended a rectangle rather than a square because it would help the flag fly better in the wind. I also suggested a five point star because it was much easier to make. All three gentlemen liked my suggestions and and told me to sew a flag with the new design. I worked very hard to finish the new flag that would maybe one day become my country’s flag. Once I was finished I showed the flag to congress who quickly accepted and ordered that I make as many flags as I could make. Soon my flags were flying on many Navy Ships. I feel like I have just achieved something great. Maybe someday my flag will fly everywhere around this great country America.
